Thank you for visiting Westsailor.com

This project began in 2004 with a dream to live on a yacht and spend my life on and around the ocean. Having pursued that dream I have come to the realisation that there are sustainable alternatives to the mundane and routine lifestyles that modern society dictates. I hoped that by creating this website it would not only serve as my own personal record of a significant turning point in my life, but also to encourage others to live their dreams and discover their passions, whatever they might be.
Initially, the main focus of this website was the lifestyle of living on a yacht, but it has now evolved to include a broader theme of alternative and sustainable living, hopefully with a hint of adventure.

If you are one of those people who are stuck in the mundane routine of “normality” and say, “I would love to live on a yacht and sail the world, but I can’t afford it.” I give you the words of Sterling Hayden:

“What these men can’t afford is not to go. They are enmeshed in the cancerous discipline of ‘security.’ And in the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine – and before we know it our lives are gone.

What does a man need – really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in – and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That’s all – in the material sense. And we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry, playthings that divert our attention from the sheer idiocy of the charade.

The years thunder by. The dreams of youth grow dim where they lay caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it the tomb is sealed.

Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?”

    • Hi Chris, my apologies for the late reply. When you sent me a message I was only experimenting with this new format and didn’t get it. I’m making the move onto WordPress so hope you are well and look forward to keeping in touch.

  1. Hey its great your back and still have the yacht. How are you? I’m still working on Infini. I’m anti fouling her in a couple of weeks. Work never ends. Do you have a main sheet traveller on your boat?

    • Hey Shair, thanks for the message. I’ve only just got this new site up online so I apologise for the delayed reply. Hope all is going well for you and Infini. How are the leaks?

    • G’day Terry, thanks for the message. You actually just gave me the much needed kick in the butt to get my site back on track. Thanks.
I’ve actually been doing a bit of 4wd’ing myself. Would be good to catch up with you sometime if you are around.

  3. Hy Rod,
    Remember me? From Portugal?
I’m glad everything is ok with you and Cutty 🙂 … When you “disappeared” was when Australia had all those problems with fires and floods, so I was concerned anything happened to El Viajero crew.
I can see now that everything is ok (except the injury ) and that you’ve been keeping yourself busied! By the way loved your Triade “motorcice, truck, house” lovrd each one of them.
Since we last comunicate, I’ve stop working as an architect, sold my boat, my house etc… I’m kind of starting a new life now. I dedicate myself to photography these days and move to a small house.
Bought a vw westfalia as my everyday car where I make some voyages with Cuba ( She is ok and looking as gorgeous as Cutty he he ). But the boat bug is hard to kill and I’m already looking for the next one… Couldn’t bought the Westsail when one appeared nearby… oh well…
    Looking forward this 2013!!

    • Hi Rafael, great to hear from you. Unfortunately I went offline for a while but I’m back and hoping to have some adventures in the future. Sounds like you have made some big changes in your life and you are pursuing your passions. Congratulations!
I always expected to see you sail from Portugal on your yacht with Cuba. The boat bug never dies once you have had a taste.
Keep in touch. I’d love to see some of your photos.
